Concentration camp, part of Auschwitz complex, opened in 1944. Of the 500 Jewish inmates, most from Lodz ghetto, only a few survived to be by the Red Army. All others were either worked and starved to death, or died on the death marches on the way to other camps.

5 Auschwitz Revolt [Edit]German camps in Poland
In 1943, the Auschwitz Fighting Group was formed in Birkenau. This resistance group provided prisoners with food and medicine and documented Nazi crimes. Escape and sabotage plots were planned, arms were smuggled in, and contact was maintained with underground units. Sonderkommando prisoners staged an uprising during which all participants were killed.
